Free Because I’m Me

Self command is the part of freedom nobody can hand you. It is the work of knowing what pulls you off center, then choosing not to follow it.

Used to think contradiction was my affliction. Studying myself became my new addiction. That line is not about having myself all figured out. It is about finally being willing to look at the pattern instead of blaming the next person, the next room, or the next bad day.

No more liquor to cloud my vision. Filled with spirit, my mission. I wrote it because freedom has to mean something in the everyday. It is not just money or a title or the ability to walk into a room. Sometimes freedom is being able to hear your own thoughts clearly enough to make the decision you said you wanted to make.

And if you don’t know who ‘they’ is, it’s probably you. That is the line I want to sit with. We spend a lot of energy assigning every obstacle to an enemy outside ourselves. Some obstacles are real. Some doors are guarded. Some people will count you out before they know your name. Still, I have to ask what I am doing that keeps the same door closed from the inside.

I ain’t gotta be right. Walk away before the fight. I’m free because I’m me in every move. That is not passivity. It is command. I do not have to win every exchange to keep my position. I do not have to perform anger so people believe I am serious. The decision to leave a bad argument with my energy intact can be more powerful than the perfect last word.

The point is not to become somebody else’s version of disciplined. It is to stop handing the wheel to whatever is loudest in the moment. The work is personal, but the result changes everything around you: how you lead, what you tolerate, what you build, and what your family gets to experience next.

Free because I’m me does not mean I do whatever I feel. It means I can hear the feeling, understand the pattern, and still choose the move that belongs to me.
